How I made this site a possibility???
--- BASIL B.C., 1/2/2008 12:36:37 PM

http://www.basilbc.tk ---> please do visit

It all started from a curiosity, as usual at the peak of my idle physical state a.k.a boring moments. I used to believe that websites are expensive to create and maintain and can be implemented only by big…big companies. I even tried Geocities, Orkut, MySpace, Stumble upon but all these just kept me inside the same box, the box of endless limitations. This was me within the past 6 years, but now here I am having a small website of my own with the help of 100webspace [http://www.100webspace.com] and Dot TK [http://www.dot.tk ]. These people offered me a small space and a name in this web world. There are lot of others like them who will provide free space or domain name, again with some limitations. Of course!!!, nothing comes for free.

Google was the one who answered to my curiosity that emerged into my conscious mind, which evolved into thousand of questions all beginning with the critical elements such as How, Where, Why etc etc.
After I got tired existing in the community sites, public forums etc..i just went for other options available for my online exposure. This is where I started thinking whether it is possible to have a website for “FREE”. I am stressing the term FREE because this word was responsible for bringing out a necessity that became the mother of my new expedition, to find the possibilities or options available outside the usual box. It’s the necessity of a free space in the internet with a desired domain name.

Using Google I found out a website called http://www.0hosts.com/webhosts.php which gave me a start to knock the right door for a shelter. Now I know there are options, my next move was to find the best or better offer that is available for me. I started doing some comparisons and started with 100webspace. Below given information is taken from 0hosts and is a summary of the facilities and technology available for 100webspace members.

• Personal, Business
• 100 Mb
• Banner + TextLinks Allowed FTP, Web Basic CGI, PHP, SSI, FrontPage Extensions - Domain or Subdomain
• Bandwidth limit 3GB/month;
• POP3, Forwarding, Web-based E-mail; SSL;
• MySQL database;
• Statistics;
• Filesize limit 500KB

There are many free web hosting sites like http://www.gigacities.net which gives a space about 20GB space, but i believe this can be utilized by someone who knows how to develop a website and got time to fire the brains. For me that was just digging the past, after 6 years of computer education…I just retired ..i cannot open my books again..no…no….so 100webspace was a handy one..all automated with less to think about, the basics. So here we go…

Website name :- www.100webspace.com
For hosting my website
Website name :- www.dot.tk
For adding a domain name

Using 100webspace I created website hosted under subdomain of 100webspace
http://basilbc.100webspace.com
the address looks lengthy and boring, not easy to remember.

Using dot.tk I created a domain name for my subdomain address
http://www.basilbc.tk
ok now its short, cool revealing my name and a ‘www’ too !!!

http://www.basilbc.tk ?Linked? http://basilbc.100webspace.com

So in the address bar of any browser I just need to type basilbc.tk and voila…there you can see my site starting with the home page.

Problems:

‘Advertisement’ from dot.tk which will cover some part of your website on the top portion and also from 100webspace below the dot.tk..well if some one has any other better options do inform me..as I will be stuck with these options for now..But using Adblock addon [ Firefox users only] you can disable the dot.tk ad completely leaving with the only ad that 100webspace creates. After all I just started to know…so give me some time to get know other options.

So first create your website by registering in 100webspace.com. Initially your website wont have anything on it…it will be just an empty space..if you type your site address you site will be showing some file directory structure….which is not cool.

Get some content to your website…using Content Managers, which is like a built-in website package..so you don’t need to worry about developing website from the scratch. Just modify, configure and give some touch work you will get a beautiful website one within minutes. This is were your creativity and curiosity factor breaks the sound barrier.

Content Managers are available inside the Site Management of your 100webspace account under Elefante Free Scripts [ Look for a PHP Icon ]….here you will see a list of them under Content Management title. I tried using Joomla which was a failure, but seems to work fine in my Laptop locally in my Apache Server. But in the website its not coming properly, I mean you need to type basilbc.100webspace.com/Joomla1.x something to get it right….i am working on this since Joomla has got lot of features and the interface is looking terrific. But now my website content is managed by PHPfusion which is simple to manage and works fine for me at present.

The 100webspace is giving us lots of options which I haven’t tried…so lets just wind up with content management topic only. After choosing the PHPFusion, you will be carefully lead to destination..you need to create a database account also for storing any stuff.

I disabled many of the features given by PHPFusion like forums, blogs etc etc…inorder to make it simple since for now I use this site to publish only my articles. I also changed the theme to make it look cool. You have to login as administrator to modify the website…try to refer PHPfusion documentation and other options which are made available in the PHPfusion website……and by the way after setting up your website using PHPFusion, if you enter your site again you will not the change..a new look…so that’s it…phewww….

Now coming to the creation of a cool address which really took me 2 days to find one freebee….for you site…register yourself in dot.tk… they will guide you all the way. Enter your 100webspace account address..in my case it was http://basilbc.100webspace.com and no ‘www’…. Finally after you enter the desired new address the site will give you some options, if the desired name is not available…Bad luck….but in my case I got the name I wanted http://www.basilbc.tk…..they have some terms and conditions..which you have to read…please…

Use Google, Yahoo, MSN Live to register your website address….may be they will add it to their database so that your site will become well known around the world…most of the search engines have the option of adding websites to their lists…lots to learn about this topic….and I am also trying to add Google Adsense…..let me see where it will end….and I believe it is never….and also I am currently working on adding Yahoo/Google search bars in my site[it is possible !!!]..so lots of homework to do….

So this is how I made my site…hope you have got atleast a garbled idea of making a humble website….but remember the crucial part to any action is not how and when….but why…..For me, I just want to get out of the usual box. So any suggestions, complaints please mail me at frozensmilz@gmail.com. See ya..and happy browsing !!!!
