Location of the Edakkal caves
The Edakkal Caves are located on the western parts of the Ambukuthimala. These hills are located at about 12 kilometers south west of Sultan Bathery and about 6 kilometers from Ambalavayal, both towns in the Wayanad district of the state of Kerala in India. There are more than 400 carvings in the Edakkal caves area of animals, men and women, mostly of the ancient stone age people in India.
The Edakkal caves means " cave in between the stones" in the local Malayalam language, is at an altitude of 1200 meters above sea level and the peak of the Ambukuthimala is about 500 meters above the caves. The peak gives you a panoramic view of the surrounding area of the beautiful and densely forested Wayanad district. This cave is a crevice about 96 feet long and 22 feet wide and a fissure seems to have been formed by the splitting of the rocks. The depth of the fissure is about 30 feet deep and looks like a cave to the beholder.
Wall carvings at the Edakkal Caves
There are carvings at the rock shelter at Edakkal, which have been made by the ancient stone age people. These carvings show their nxiety and the disquiet they felt when the iron age technology came about. For many tourists and travellers this is an opportunity to see for themselves something very rare and special like the carvings here in these caves. The walls on both sides of the caves are embroidered to a height of about 4 meters with deeply carved motifs and signs that look dramatic in the cool and damp interiors.
You can see crosses, triangles and tridents some squares with crosses inside, a rectangle divided into 9 square shapped chambers various animals like foxes, dogs, and elephants. There are human figures as well in which many have raised hair. There is a person with his left hand unnaturally long upto his feet and holding a angular object in his right hand . Another man has a square shaped head and a spiral belly etc. There are some carvings of women too.
