These non polluting, non carbon emitting solar lanterns are the need of the hour in our country. Power cuts are there in every part of the country, only the amount of time differs from place to place.
In the rural areas we can find many households lighting carbon filled smoke emanating kerosene lamps. They should be happy to exchange their lighting system to solar lanterns if the plans of our Prime Minister materialise.
The proposal was discussed in the Prime Minister’s Energy Co-ordination Committee (ECC) meeting recently and the government is planning to formalise the scheme after listening to the opinions of the state governments. Just by replacing kerosene lamps by solar lanterns we can save 50 litres of kerosene a year.
These lanterns are available in many shapes and sizes, they are of aesthetic, light weight and are easily portable for carrying from place to place. They are non polluting and environment friendly and do not produce carbon fumes which bring on health problems. The light which emanates from these lanterns are bright and cool light. They can be used for Emergency and/or house lighting, table lamp, camping, patrolling (streets, farms), Hawker / Vendor Stalls, non-electrified remote places, education centres and schools, mass communication programs, etc.
Easy and convenient alternative to kerosene/ petromax/ gas lamps as well as substitute for domestic power connection, in times of load shedding or power cuts. Widespread use of these solar lanterns will help save kerosene and will allow the govenment to save the money spent as subsidy.
Jain Jyot Solar Lanterns, Star solar lanterns are some pf the brands of solar lanterns in our country. Our government is also planning to import some of these lanterns from foreign countries.
Yes, if all of us start using solar power for our house hold energy, the environment can be improved for our future generation also.

Good work done Latha. Presently we the human beings are hurting our natural habitat and we should find resources that are eco-friendly.Through the use of solar laterns we can conserve electric energy for future and also the important thing,it is not causing any pollution to the environment. We have to invest some money at the time of purchase but it results in more savings than what we invested.
Once again Thankyou for your useful information.

Thank you Anusma and Balaji,
I felt very bad when I read about these lanterns. Why can't we people make use of solar energy instead of crying over power cuts and load sheddings.
Solar Energy is available in lots and is going waste , particularly in our country where electricity and the fuel power are less.
If our government can make use of this solar power, they can bring light to many of the villages, now in the dark.
The government should not just talk it should act. Then the power situation will also improve because there will be less demand.

The solar energy that is available for India is quite high as we are in the Tropic Region. Though the initial charges and the installation charges for solar lanterns or for other solar products may be high, but it is one time installation.
When we had been to Tirupathi recently, we saw the street lights were installed with solar panel and they all glowed up very brightly in the night. If the hallogen lamps, mercury lamps and sodium vapour lamps are replaced with solar lamps and solar lanterns we could simply save lots of energy and reduce the pollution too.
You are absolutely right, villages that are in dark could be lighted up using the solar power.
