I find that sarees for today's modern ladies are just style statements and I am not going to talk about them here. We are going to raise this topic for a regular user of saree that is only for those who wear saree and saree only.
As far as I know, the place to get synthetic sarees is the Bombay and Surat areas. Good silk from Kanchivaram, Thribuvanam (near Tanjavur) in Tamilnadu. Cottons are available almost everywhere and Bengal Cotton and Kanchi cotton are good as far as their durability is concerned.
Talking of the synthetic ones it is essential to know the fabric you are selecting before you buy the saree. Synthetics such as polyesters are heavy and they last long but the only flaw with them is that they are not skin friendly. They just make you sweat very badly during summers and monsoons. Go for Chiffon or Georgette and Crapes are even good. These varieties may be a bit costly but they sure can make you look like a diva even if you were a ten kg over weight.
Silks are available in various types such as Benaras, Kanchi, Mysore, Dharmavaram, Aarani, Kollehal, Thribuvanam etc., of all these varieties you can vouch for Kanchi, Thribuvanam, Kollehal and Mysore. This is my order of choice. This order I have created according to my own observation and I myself have my mothes Kanchivaram saree which to this day is having a good shine in its zari and a good body and is just 50 years old, older than I am.The silk sarees I should say are timeless classics. Hope all of you agree.
Cotton are my favourite too they keep the body cool and the only thing I go crazy is maintaining them by putting them starch. Nowadays you get good cotton polyester and cotton silk mix sarees that come at an affordable price. They also have blouse attached to them and you have a perfect matching blouse to go with. The cotton silk mix are great for weddings, temples or a visit to your close relative or even your office if you feel comfortable. Go for saree now and pick your version before I start talking about my favourite place for shopping sarees.

Dear Ms. Lalitha,
Though I dont wear much of sarees at home, I really love them and have a good collection. I have always felt a great look whenever I wear sarees. I have admired one of my teachers when I was in school, just for the way she wears her saree. She will be wearing cotton saree only, but still, it is a wonder, how she maintained it the whole day without any wrinkle.

And as you say, Kanchipuram silks are the best and I too have my grandma's saree. Now a days, like in many products, Kanchipuram silk sarees also have lots of innovative designs and shops like RMKv and Pothys come up with speciality designs that make even the youngsters not just the elders go crazy for those type of designs. Variety is the spice of the life.

I am always against polyeste sarees, not just because of the allergy they create to skin, but also because of the danger they pose while working in the kitchen. But otherwise, polyester sarees from Bombay Dyeing are simply superb and they are just elegant.

Coming to the polycot and silkcotton sarees, polycot are great even to wear for office (no need of startch, simple ironing is enough). Like wise your judgement on silkcotton sarees are 100% true. Some of these silk cotton sarees cost around Rs.5000 also and they are really a good competitor for the silk sarees. Many youngsters and middle aged women dont mind putting money on this silk cotton varities.

Waiting to read about your shopping experiences and the best places to shop for sarees.

RajmiArun,

Dear Lalitha,

I also liked what you have written here and I agree cent percent with it.

Yes, for people wearing sarees the tips you have given are very good. Most of the time I also wear sarees only. But I am just not able to hold on to Kanjeevaram sarees. I prefer cool cotton ones, may be because I am a keralite.

I also like Calcutta handlooms and Andhra handlooms. I also like to buy chiffons, georgettes and crepes as you said. I am happy wearing sarees but for comfort around the house I wear salwars.

I can tell you that I am older than you and in my fifties. Thank you very much for the nice article.
