An important accessory to electronic equipments like computers, laptops, music systems etc, the head phones should be selected very carefully if you want good quality sound in which external noise is completely cut off. Amomg all available models the circum=aural ones are the best. their sound quality is superb. Their structure is their main feature – a huge cup that encompasses the whole ear; the rim that has a soft padding. The driver size is about 1.5-2 inches, and they are usually high in impedance, thus giving louder output volumes. The two available models of this type are closed back and open back. The closed back ones are totally solid all through the 'cup' that encloses the speaker, while open back headphones have a grille.
These headphones are almost always attached over the head via an adjustable headband. In the larger closed back models at times they may get heavy.
Supra-aural The supra-aural version of headphones are commonly known as 'over the ear' headphones. These headphones perch themselves on top of the pinna, and are thus, lighter and smaller and look less obtrusive. They are covered with foam over the whole driver surface. Other than this, the supra-aural versions when compared to the circum-aural have a little less in clarity and tightness in their sound reproduction. Supra-aural are constructed with a traditional headband over the head. Nowadays, you can find them attached to clips that fit around the ear, so they prove lighter without the headband. Another style is when the headband is bent to fit around the back of the head, thus keeping hair intact.
There are also some specialised circum-aural/supra-aural types of headphones like noise canceling ones. These have a special circuitry that needs to be switched on, after which out coming noise is switched off, and you feel like you are suspended in a state of deaf doubt, as you can’t really hear your own voice.
A headset is a combination of supra-aural (or circum-aural) headphones along with a microphone coming out of the left ear piece. This is common in call centers and are used primarily for internet communication and gaming, where speaking is required.
EARPHONE TYPES
The most used and abused speakers that every one has owned at some point in their life. These are tiny speakers, with lesser power and impedance. They fit in right at the opening of the ear, as their radius is more or less the size of the opening. These are covered with padding of either cloth or rubber, yet they do not sound quality as good sound as the other headphones, though their ease of use and portability make them popular amongst those who enjoy music while eating, sleeping, jogging, etc.
In-ear or Canal phones
Canal phones are different since they fit right into the ear canal, with the help of their unique construction: a rubber sleeve protrusion is attached on the earpiece that acts as a ear plug, thus blocking out external noise. Another advantage is how comfortable they are. Since they fit into the ear directly it isn't required to attach them to any clip or headband of sorts.
The other special kinds are surround headphones, which emulate surround sound in your head with just regular stereo headphones, at least on the exterior and are popular with gamers.
RECOMMENDATIONS
Always pick a headphone that gives a good quality sound output. The size of every person's ear is different and you should get a pair that fits well to derive optimal quality. If you are an everyday train traveler, do not opt for circum-aural headphones since they are heavy and might get stuffy. If you have an MP3 and other portable players then get a supra-aural pair. Else, headphones like the Sennheiser PXC-450 work best when teamed with an amplifier and bigger music players. Circum-aural works best for studio professionals who need absolutely clear and taut sound. Gamers too could opt for these headphones as they offer great imaging and engulf the listener. Also, RJs and DJs need this kind too for mixing in tracks in their studios and noisy clubs respectively. Earphones are obviously used for iPods, Zunes and all the other portable media players out there. Due to their portability they make good sense to take around while you’re on the move.
