This is a major headache for most buyers.
In our good old days we used to trust the shopkeepers and shop only in those we trust.
A good silk saree should have weight atleast 400-500 grams it should weigh with out the zari. With zari it should be around 450-600 or even more depending on the zari work.
Always buy a heavy sari and do not buy thin saris as these are cheap ones and they shall never withstand the test of time.
The rate of a sari is determined largely by the weight, then its zari work, border colours and pallu works. For contrast borders and pallu the price will be more. The width of the border also increases with increase in price.
The colour of some saris also increase their price. A double shaded saree will cost you more than a sari of the same weight in a single colour. A saree with zari bootis also will cost you more.
In short, a sari with more work and design will be costlier than a saree with little or no design or work.
Nowadays with silk mark available you can trust the saree that possess this mark and buy the same with out any doubt in your mind.

Hi Lalithaji,
What you said about kanchivaram silk Sarees are very true.People tend to buy these Sarees which are lighter in weight as one can wear it easily than the heavier ones.Even I go for Sarees with lighter weight, but after reading your article I knew the difference, and for Diwali I would buy a kanchivaram saree by keeping in mind the suggestions you have given.Lalithaji you could also give some tips on maintaining and washing kanchivaram sarees. It would be very useful.Thank you.
