Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge

Genre: Romance
Stars: Shah Rukh Khan, Kajol, Anupam Kher, Amrish Puri, Farida Jalal

Most people believe in love and for those people, Yash Raj Films' offering “Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge" rings a bell (in this film, a cow bell to be more precise). The film opens with a small happy Punju family in London. A typical Indian family with the man of the house (Amrish Puri) busy at his shop and the lady of the house (Farida Jalal) busy bringing up her two daughters. One daughter, Simran (Kajol) who is waiting for her Prince Charming to emerge from the heavens and the other daughter, Chutki (lesser know actor) a little two small and smart to fall in love!
Meanwhile some where in London meet Raj (Shah Rukh Khan) a rich spoilt brat of a rich funny father (Anupam Kher) is busy whiling away time drinking, playing soccer and romancing women, who has decided to go for a long Euro Rail trip with his buddies.
Cut to Simran who pleads with her parents to allow her one her first and last euro Rail holiday after which she vows to get married to a Punju boy and settle with him in India, as per her parent's wishes. Simran's father allows his daughter to enjoy her last few days of independence.
As luck would have it, and also like any other Hindi movies', Simran meets Raj and they begin with arguments. Raj tries his luck with Simran when they miss their train because of a cow bell that Simran stops to buy. However after a lot of cute songs, Simran and Raj come back to reality, only for Simran to discover that she cannot forget Raj. When Simran confesses to her mother about this love, her father decides that it's best that the family shifts to India and Simran fulfil her vow to them (like a good Indian girl)
Raj discovers that he is actually in love with Simran, thanks to his dad's persistence and then goes to visit Simran, simply to realize that she has left for India, leaving behind the cow bell as a symbol for Raj to decipher.
Raj decides to follow Simran to India. He befriends the man Simran is to marry and with some tricks becomes close to Simran's family, Some cute moments follow. Raj's father decides to come to his son's rescue and lands in Punjab to help his son find his true love.
What happens when Raj's identity is revealed? Does Simran's dad believe in his daughter's love? Well, a clever audience does not really have to wait till the end as the title suggests the end loud enough.
A musical delight, this film is for the mushy Mills and Boon readers. But hey, what wrong in believing in love – you can fall in love anytime

Review: Very Nice movie!
Review By: Aira    Review Date: 26 Feb 2009

This movie is absolutely rocking full of comedy, love, emotions, sentiments and of course story. Shah Rukh Khan played as Raj, a rich Londoner and he wishes to go to Europe for a months vacation. Kajol played as Simran and she does the same. Story goes this way - Raj and Simran plays joke on each other, in this way things goes on and both fall in love with each other. Simran has been already fixed with another person in India, called Kamal jeet. But how he manages to win Simran from her father who has done this typical Indian deed, you can see in this movie. Shahrukh Khan does a wonderful job, not only in dancing but also in acting. Kajol is as usual always charming, very sweet and very loving. Anupam Kher is excellent in his role as a Rajs father. Amrish Puri also does a good job, very hilarious job. Songs are very attractive, very romantic. It is a nice, romantic movie. Every body right from the child to adult can watch it. There is not too much fight, you can say as bloodshed, just one scene at the end of the movie.

It is one of the most completely, openly joyful films I have ever seen. In many ways a totally Western film, it is yet completely un-Western, and absolutely invigorating.

I found the (rather oddly looped in places) mix of Hindi and English dialog to be a lot of fun to follow (as incomplete as the subtitles sometimes seemed). The Indian/Western pop structure of the songs was entertaining and infectious. The choreography is simply amazing, and some of the most sheerly athletic Ive seen. The Indian roots of the dance routines were at first almost unnervingat once familiar yet bizarre, almost surreal (to my Western eyes). It was sheer fun making the cultural adjustment.

The plot is predictable, almost pedestriancertainly not what youd call "never done before," and yet I found myself completely absorbed in the story, and rooting for the main characters. This is in large part due to Shahrukh Khans and Kajols performances as Raj and Simran. He is totally endearing, and she is totally hot!, and their on screen chemistry is as cute & perky and smoldering & steamy as Fred and Ginger at their peak. It was, simply put, fun to watch them having so much fun.

Director Aditya Chopra was, I understand, only 24 when he made Dilwale, and the film was so successful its Indian first run lasted a world-record 11 years (and may still be going on, as far as I know). A heckuva testimony to Bollywood indeed. This movie has instantly become one of my favorite musicals, and I look forward to finding more films from Chopra, Khan, and Kajol. What a treat!

Probably one of the greatest love stories ever told. Director Aditya Chopra made his debut as a director with this film. Aditya is the son of legendary Director/Producer Yash Chopra who gave us films like Deewar, Darr, Waqt, Kabhie Kabhie, Dil To Pagal Hai and Veer-Zaara.

Aditya was one the first Directors of the New Generation of the Indian film Directors. With his first film he got rave reviews and was immediately classified as one of the best directors in Indian Cinema. With DDLJ, Aditya showed us what falling in love, respect, and family values are all about. This film also confirmed the Pair of Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol as one of the best in the Indian Cinema. It made Kajol and Shah Rukh superstars over night and two of the most sought after actors.

DDLJ also started the trend of love stories in Indian Cinema. Before DDLJ, most Indian films were action films. But DDLJ changed all that and the way of war was changed to a way of love. Its incredible how this film changed the Indian Cinema and the way of making films. DDLJ is a Forever Classic.

It recently set a new record for the longest running film when it crossed the 500th week mark (that means its a 10 time golden jubilee), the previous record was 275 weeks and was held by SHOLAY (another forever classic). All I can say is you must watch this movie, because "After Raj met Simran, love wasnt the same...come fall in love all over again".
