Trupti, Mumbai Review

A couple of years ago, this restaurant was renovated and the result is a wonderful décor that is not over-the-top. Abstract art adorns the light-coloured walls. The lighting is mellow and not harsh, with pretty coloured globes in red, blue, yellow and green covering the lights hanging down from the ceiling. The seating arrangement is exceptional, with rectangular etched glass discretely separating some of the tables certain sections have table arrangements for large groups. This is also one of the few restaurants where I have been served really fast. A note at the back of the menu promises service within 10 minutes – and that promise is definitely kept!

I dined here with a friend who ordered the Rs. 23/- idli-wada sambhar/chutney (it is spelt ‘chatni' on the menu) from the south Indian section of the menu I ordered the Rs. 24/- cutlet (available only on Tuesday, Wednesday and Sunday). The food was piping hot, the cutlet accompanied by a small bowl of ketchup and dark green chutney. I would have liked the chutney to have been in its own separate bowl – it was in one half of the same bowl as the ketchup. The chutney was so spicy that it instantly had my eyes watering and I had to quickly scoop up spoonfuls of sauce and reach for the glass of water to lessen the heat on my tongue! The cutlets were in adorable heart shapes. Very crisp, stuffed with grated beetroot and peas, they were just very slightly over-fried, as was evident by the small ‘burnt' mark on one side. As for what my friend ordered, the idli was a major disappointment, as it was just not fluffy as is expected of a south Indian dish. The medu wada too was just Ok. The sambhar, though, was quite good, but, again, not quite like the authentic S.Indian sambhar. The green coconut chutney, thankfully, was not the same spicy one that came with the cutlet! Since we were in a rush, we did not order anything more.

I decided to take a parcel of two methi rotis (Rs.16/- each) home. We decided to vacate the table for the hungry diners waiting outside, so stepped out while the parcel was being readied. Outside the restaurant, the owner has thoughtfully placed a couple of chairs and provided a black granite seating arrangement for those queuing up outside the doors. The parcel was handed over to us, the rotis neatly wrapped in foil packaging. When I opend it up at home, the medium size rotis turned out to be bland to taste. However, it is just right for people who have to restrict their spice and oil intake – the rotis had not a drop of oil on them and not a single chilli!

A relative of mine has dined here at luch time (11a.m. to 3p.m.) and tried out the thali. Costing less than Rs. 50/-, she said it was fairly good. It included 3 plain wheat rotis (you can opt for 6 puris instead), rice, two types of curry and vegetables, curds, pickle & papad, and koshimbir. A similar thali but with more rice options is available as a dinner thali after 7p.m.
