Review: Efficient and sturdy

The Nokia E75 has one of the features that mobile users simply love: a slide-out keyboard. It is easy to use, too, as the all the keys are large and one does not need to bend over it to peer at the alphabets.

Another favourite of mobile users is mail messaging and this, too, is incorporated. Another goodie of the E75 is the camera, which is quite like other phones. As for the musically inclined, you can listen to your favourite music with the hands-free headphones.

On the whole, a good phone to buy.

Announced at GSMA 2009, the Nokia E75 is the latest Nokia E series smartphone to hit the market. Unlike the Nokia E71/E71x, the E75 features a more compact, cell-phone-like design, which is a welcome change from the recent deluge of slate QWERTY devices. In addition, the E75 includes the companys new Nokia Messaging application, which improves the mobile e-mail experience. Yet, despite the robust messaging capabilities, we were slightly disappointed in the call quality, and the unlocked phone costs around $530. However, if you crave the design, somethings thats lacking at most of the major carriers, the Nokia E75 is a solid choice, and we favor it slightly more than the similar HTC S743.

The good:
The Nokia E75 offers a compact design while managing to fit in a full QWERTY keyboard. The smartphone ships with Nokias new messaging client, which features push delivery for all accounts. Other highlights include 3G, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and a 3.2-megapixel camera.

The bad:
The E75 is expensive. Call quality wasnt the best, and the dialpad on front is cramped.

The bottom line:
The Nokia E75 is a nice alternative to the current crop of slate QWERTY messaging smartphones, offering a compact design without sacrificing the keyboard or e-mail capabilities. However, without carrier backing, the unlocked phone is a bit expensive.

Design

Its been a little while since weve seen something other than a slate QWERTY device in the Nokia E series, so the Nokia E75 is a refreshing change. In its closed state, the E75 looks like a regular candy-bar-style phone and measures 4.4 inches tall by 1.9 inches wide by 0.5 inch thick and weighs 4.9 ounces. While fairly compact and pocketable, the handset is a little on the hefty side, but its made with quality material and has a nice solid construction. We also like the design better than the similar HTC S743. Nokia offers the E75 in black or red.

Features

The Nokia E75 is powered by Nokias S60 platform (Feature Pack 2 based on Symbian OS v9.3) platform and offers a user interface and features similar to previous E series devices. There are some minor tweaks to the UI, but the biggest difference between the E75 and the rest of the E family is e-mail. The E75 is the first S60 device to ship with the new Nokia Messaging application, which allows you to easily set up access to numerous accounts and receive real-time delivery of messages.

The Nokia E75 is the latest Nokia Smart phone and was announced at the mobile world congress. It is another member of the Nokia E-series along with the Nokia E55 which is due out around the same time as the Nokia E75 and just before the Nokia E63 and Nokia E52. The Nokia E75 is about an average size for a smart phone being 14.4mm x 11.8mm x 50mm wide. When the E75 is open to display the QWERTY keyboard it becomes 80mm wide. The handset can be used in a horizontal or vertical position, obviously if you are typing a text message you would want to use the QWERTY keyboard so would therefore be using the E75 in a horizontal position. This E75 3G smartphone beauty comes in a choice of 3 colours, copper yellow, silver black or red. There is a 2.4 inch screen using 16 million colours on a LCD display.

The homescreen can be customized to however you find it easiest to use the phone, there are 2 screen options supported. Navigating the menu on the Nokia E75 is easy by making use of the Navi™ key. The majority of functions can therefore be activated by just pressing the Navi™ key, meaning less key required overall. The on board QWERTY keyboard slides out of the side of the Nokia E75 and is great if you write a lot of text messages and emails, makes inputting text a lot quicker. This Nokia phone is running using Symbian 9.3 operating system with S60 software. The joy of S60 software is that it is extendable and you can use multiple applications at the same time, without worrying about shutting down previous applications, this is limited by the hardware on your handset though. The E75 is a good sized smartphone which measures 111.8mm tall by 14.4mm deep which is 50mm wide when in its slide closed position & 80mm wide when in its slide open position. The one touch key on the Nokia E75 will allow you to use the calendar and email features with one touch, although that is fairly obvious by the name of the key!

Nokia E75 has a great spec list and will be exceptional if you are a business user who is constantly emailing. You might not be a business user but really into updating your profile on facebook or twitter, having the internet in your pocket with a QWERTY keyboard will make this really easy.

The ambient light sensor and the video-call camera are at the top of the front panel of the Nokia E75, either side of the earpiece. Below them is the 2.4" display, followed by the D-pad, which is quite comfortable to use. It has a programmable LED in the center that can be set to indicate missed events or simply serve as a standby breathing light. In short, the layout and handling of the controls on the E75 are inferior to the E71, though thats before weve passed judgment on the QWERTY keyboard. The left side of the Nokia E75 is where the microUSB port and the microSD card slot. The Nokia E75 display has the companys trademark high image quality.
