Product: Dell Vostro 1510

Review: Work Champion
Review By: vk    Review Date: 08 Mar 2009

Before I review the Dell Vostro 1510, I would like to give a tip to Indian buyers: if you know somebody based in Chennai [where the Dell factory is based], buy a Dell laptop from there as you will be paying less than if you buy it from Mumbai or Delhi.

Also, note that new desktops and laptops now are generally loaded with Windows Vista Starter. Hence, like me, if you prefer the earlier Windows XP OS, ensure that you state your preference when you book your laptop and tell the Company representative to load the genuine Windows XP on your laptop. Furthermore, when buying a new laptop do state which anti-virus software you prefer, as later, when the installed one matures, it is a headache to uninstall the old one for another one.

I had decided to go in for a Dell as a local computer technician had recommended it as one of the best brands. My main requirement was a large screen and a DVD Writer so after looking at various models on the Dell site, settled for the Vostro 1510 as it has a 15.4-inch screen.

When it arrived, I was very excited. It looked really sleek and beautiful, as laptops do when they are brand new. It was really huge and not as light as I thought it would be.

The mouse was smooth and the keys really light and delicate. I was not happy, though, with the location of the ‘Delete' key – it is situated at the extreme right hand corner and is not quickly reachable due to the vast keyboard.

The speakers are located on either side of the keyboard and I found them sufficient to listen to old Hindi film songs. For those who are used to turning up the volume for music and films, though, it is advisable to attach external speakers. The DVD drive is really great – no button to press at all for inserting and ejecting a CD! All you do is to gently push the CD in and when finished with it click on ‘Eject' on your screen. Speaking of the screen, the screen is really awesome. It was great to work with such a large screen after having worked on the smaller screen of my IBM ThinkPad. The screen was eye-friendly, without any glare.

A major plus point was that despite working several hours, the laptop did not get heated up. I do not know the actual battery life as, from previous experiences with other laptops, I prefer not to use up the battery and work with a power connection.

Overall, it has been an extremely satisfying experience to work on the Dell Vostro 1510 and I would definitely recommend it to those having the budget to buy it. All in all, it is a work champion!

After last years successful launch of the new Vostro line of copmputers targeted ar small businesses, Dell made a serious effort to listen to customer feedback criticizing Dells thick and heavy laptops. The result was a bold revision of the Vostro line with thinner and lighter chassis designs for 2008. The new Dell Vostro 1510 is a 15.4" screen notebook designed for businesses that need a budget desktop replacement. Is this the best choice for businesses or consumers looking for a value-priced notebook? Lets see.

The Dell Vostro 1510 is available with a range of Intel processors (from the 1.86GHz Celeron M M540 up to the T9500 2.6GHz Core 2 Duo). There are four 15.4" screen offerings, a WXGA or WXGA+ display with matte anti-glare coating and WXGA or WXGA+ "TrueLife" glossy display. The notebook can take up to 4GB of RAM and Dell offers 32-bit versions of Microsoft Windows Vista Business or Windows XP Professional. The system is priced starting at $599 with integrated Intel X3100 graphics at the time of this writing, but is also available with nVidia 8400M GS dedicated graphics.

The new Dell Vostro 1510 is a 15.4" screen notebook designed for businesses that need a budget desktop replacement. Is this the best choice for businesses or consumers looking for a value-priced notebook?

The Dell Vostro 1510 is available with a range of Intel processors (from the 1.86GHz Celeron M M540 up to the T9500 2.6GHz Core 2 Duo). There are four 15.4" screen offerings, a WXGA or WXGA+ display with matte anti-glare coating and WXGA or WXGA+ "TrueLife" glossy display. The notebook can take up to 4GB of RAM and Dell offers 32-bit versions of Microsoft Windows Vista Business or Windows XP Professional.

A new innovations for the Vostro line is the "Hyperband Multi-Antenna" housed inside the LCD lid which Dell claims "can provide excellent reception and help reduce dropped signals" for both Wi-Fi and bluetooth.

Front view: LED status lights, microphone jack, headphone out, media card reader
Left side: Two USB ports, ExpressCard slot, and WiFi on/off switch
Right side: Firewire, two USB ports, Slot-loading optical drive, and security lock slot
Back view: Battery, VGA out, Ethernet and power jack.

The Vostro 1510 does an impressive job keeping heat under control. The system fan and heatsinks in the 1510 do a great job managing heat when the system is under load .

In short, the Vostro 1510 is a good addition to the Vostro family and gives business professionals and consumers on a budget another alternative to the Dell Inspiron 1525.
