Karpagam Restaurant, ECR Review

The restaurant is located on a very busy road and from outward appearances does not exactly look inviting. As I mentioned in another restaurant review, though, do not go by the exterior appearance! Do step inside and you will be surprised by the very satifying cuisine on its menu. With two others, I stepped inside to an ordinary ambience with only a couple of the dozen tables occupied. The menu items are posted on large boards on the wall itself so you can decide quickly what to order. However, be prepared to have not as quick service! There was just one person to serve and he was also doubling up as the person making the coffee! So we had a fairly longish wait till the food arrived at our table.

It was worth the wait. I am sure that you must have been found the photo of the dosa very appealing - and, believe me, it is as yummy as it looks! I had ordered the ghee roast dosa (the one in the photo) and was literally staring at it when it arrived. It is in a conical hat-like shape and stands tall on a plantain leaf served in a steel plate. Its base covers the small katori of sambhar and the two chutneys. Starting from the top, I made my way down from its peak, savouring the authentic taste of ghee. It was roasted to a nice crisp form and lived up to its name. The chutneys too were very good, though the sambhar was not as good as the one Ive had at Vishranthi. The dosa was definitely worth the Rs.30/- price. The other two members of my group feasted on masala dosa and plain dosa, both of which were equally yummy. The coffee was also just great. All in all, it was a value-for-money experience.

For some strange reason, though, no spoon was provided with the plates, so unless you ask for it, you have to scoop up any remaining sambhar and chutney with your fingers.

So, despite the overall average rating I would give it high rating for the dosas and would definitely recommend you to visit this restaurant.
