Ananda Bhavan, Adyar Review When two of us stepped inside, what drew our attention first was the golden ceiling with its chandelier (see photo) one is more likely to see such a décor in a jewellery store than a dining establishment! On the left side, there is a glass enclosed counter from end-to-end displaying a variety of mouthwatering sweets and snacks. The tables are few, so one may have to wait. Luckily, we went when the diners were few.
We ordered a mini-meal (Rs. 39/-) and Sambhar Rice (Rs. 24/-). Our orders came within five minutes, the food being served in white and yellow trays that honestly looked tacky. However, the food was really good and wholesome. The mini-meal comprised of one roti, three different rice varieties – curd, sambhar, and tomato – and accompanied with a pickle and some unknown fried chips-like item. Curd rice is very popular in Chennai, due to its cooling effect in the hot climate that prevails practically all year round. The curd rice was thus the usual variety served at any restaurant in the city. The tomato rice and sambhar rice were extremely tasty and the pickle was yummy, though a bit spicy. The unknown fried item was ok, not really having any taste at all. The separate Sambhar rice dish that I ordered was simply delicious. In fact, it was the best I one I had when in Chennai. It had a good sprinkling of beans, tomatoes and onions and was very well cooked. The quantity also was substantial, and not just a meager amount. It was accompanied by potato vegetable. While the rice was hot, the vegetable was cold. Seems to have been prepared well in advance!
Final Verdict: Simple meal, great food, value for money. Our two items resulted in a bill of less than Rs.70/- (including tax).
Note: there is barely enough parking space as it is located on a very busy road just ahead of the Adyar signal so it is a bit tough to park a large vehicle + it can well come in the way of oncoming traffic.
