Shri Rajasthani Dhaba, Annanagar Review
Annanagar can sure qualify to be a foodies delight for the variety of cuisines that one can find here. One of my favourite joints for vegetarian food is the Rajasthani dhaba. People who know me well might faint if they come to know that Im vouching for a vegetarian restaurant because I rarely venture into a pure vegetarian outlet. Well as you can imagine, i was forcefully taken to this place with guarantees that I will not come out hungry or angry. So I gave in.
First impression when I walked in - A regular restaurant. North Indian version of Saravana Bhavan. Cling-clang of steel plates, katoris and tumblers make for your light music in the background. Ambience is not their focus I guess. Occasionally you can get a faint hint of Hindi film music reminding you that you are in a north indian restaurant! I was recommended to try their regular thali. Within 5 minutes, the plates with their four katoris were assembled. Kadhi goes into one, dal into the second, aloo gravy into the third and a vegetable side
dish into the fourth. Another veggie side dish went onto the plate directly. Curd, cut onions and cucumbers with lemon as accompaniments. And then came another waiter with hot fluffy phulkas lightly buttered on top. I got two onto my plate. One piece of phulka with vegetable into my mouth and I sure saw myself transported to my childhood friends home. Delicious is not the word. Heavenly! I saw myself eating one, two, three, four,five phulkas and then my colleague said - enough - you have the rice+dal+pickle+papad after this. I had that too.
When all this was so fabulous, how could I be without trying their top dessert as well? It was the matka kulfi. Fits into your palm - eat the kulfi and take the
matka home to pot your plant.
And guess what, for a die-hard north-indian foodaholic, this is THE place for an unlimited thali. Here the phulkas are unlimited unlike most other Chennai restaurants where the north-indian unlimited thali comes with limited rotis.
Some of their other must-try dishes: Mooli parantha, Gulab jamun. The standard thali is an all time favourite - quick, non fussy, delightful. Their veg side dishes keep changing everyday and each one is worth trying. Lunch for two will be around Rs.200/-. If you are looking for a regular eatery with great food minus the frills and fancy, this is the place to visit.
PS: There is just one problem though, after a full meal you had better take the staircase to go back because you will not fit into their compact lift. Visit this joint and youll know what I mean!
