Majuli Island Review

Majuli Island is an unpolluted riverine located 20 km from Jorhat District of Assam. There are few legendary tales associated with this island. It is been said that Lord Krishna use to play on this island along with his friends. The major language spoken on this island is Assamese.

This Island has become one of the leading establishments of the Vaishnavism and one finds several monasteries and Satras established centuries ago here on the island.
The people staying on this island are mostly tribal, most of them immigrants from Arunachal Pradesh living here for centuries. This people are associated with the outside world only through the ferry services. But still, the island is very well developed. There are various institutions, colleges and hospitals.

One should definitely pay a visit to Majuli Island, whenever one visits Assam as Majuli Island is one of its kinds. Real unique. Though this place is getting destroyed due to extensive soil erosion, but then don't we visit the dilapidated structures and monuments all around the world.

There are several transport buses that ply regularly from Jorhat and Guwahati to Majuli. In fact private transports are available too. IN case you wish to drive down your own, you get cars or jeeps on hire, which can be carried in the ferries to the island.

The best time to be on this island is November, though one can visit this island anytime of the year except monsoons. In monsoons, the island is flooded and ferry services are temporarily shut down.

As this island has lot of monasteries and Satras, same can be visited when on this island. There are in all 21 Satras on this island. Though all of them are not active at the moment, but few of them are and they have been transformed into a gallery of art, dance and music.

Apart from that one can hire boats and can go bird watching or cruising on the river appreciating the spectacular beauty of the island. The sunset on this island is worth watching especially in winters.

The various festivals celebrated on this island include the Ali-ao-Ivignag festival that takes place in the month of February and the Paal Namm festival that takes place in the mid November and December.

Then there are various arts exhibitions and events for art lovers, which showcases various arts like mask making, pottery etc.
