Review: Samsung D880 Dual Sim - Overview
Review By: Gyandeep Kaushal    Review Date: 27 Mar 2010

The Samsung D880 Dual Sim is also known as Samsung D880 Duos. In fact, that is the actual name of the product, the market name. Here I am with a review of the product.

Appearance of Samsung D880 Dual SIM

The appearance of the phone is good, though following the trend of Samsung slider phones. To me, most of the slider phones which Samsung has produced look too much same. However, this one looks a bit different though not too much different. The phone is not available in many colors basically the all black color combination is what people are getting, though there is an option for Silver color too but it is not well marketed by Samsung to the customers. The cool looks of the keypad remind me the keypad of the Nokia N95 8GB set. The front panel of Samsung D880 Dual SIM is also good.

Display of Samsung D880 Dual SIM

There is nothing so hotshot in the display of the phone. However, it isn't so bad either. The display of the phone is 2.3 inches with a 240 x 320. This size – resolution ratio reminds me of the trendy combination which Sony Ericsson had given to its phone over a long time. However, the screen does not make too much difference. It is a 256K colors TFT screen and the display is quite informative, detailed and clarity blessed. However, I would have appreciated Samsung even more if it could have made it a 3 inch screen and a better screen resolution, something like 480 x 640 or something, like in the Samsung star, which is less costly than the Duos.

Entertainment of Samsung D880 Dual SIM

When it comes to the multimedia features, I have got only one word to express my feelings with the entertainment aspect of the phone. The word is ‘average'. The phone has not got any special entertainment features which can make it stand out of the row. However, the features are all that Samsung could fit in the phone compromising with the Dual sim advancement. The phone has got a MP3 playback capability and a 3.15 Megapixel camera with 2048 x 1536 pixel resolution capable of taking both still shots as well as video recording. The phone has not got features like Sony Ericsson and Nokia used to give in their phone regarding the entertainment features. So when it comes to entertainment, I can find just two things.

Storage of Samsung D880 Dual SIM

The phone has a 60 MB internal memory and supports an expansion of memory upto 2 GB which is not too much in these days because phones in the range of Rs. 3000 – 5000 are also coming with a 1 GB card packed in the box. At least Samsung could have managed to gift this phone's customers a complimentary memory. However that would have been possible because of the other features.

Connectivity Features of Samsung D880 Dual SIM

When it comes to connectivity features, the phone has good features which work in the today's Indian towns and cities. Today, in India you won't get too many people who actually rely on the Wi-Fi networks but they use GPRS packets to enjoy surfing, so absence of Wi-Fi does not matter too much. The phone has got Bluetooth, GPRS with EDGE and of course, with no doubts, USB connectivity. Of course GPS would be a luxury feature and how many people are able to use it today? So it has got okay okay type features in the name of connectivity features. The first SIM is a triband however, the second SIM is a dual band only and both are GSM. This is what it has got.

Battery of Samsung D880 Dual SIM

When it comes to battery, I would use the word magnificent. The phone is blessed with a magnificent 1200 mAh battery by Samsung. Taking the types of features present in the phone the battery is outstanding and capable to render hi-fi backup. As an average, it gives 350 hours standby time and up to 4 hours of regular uninterrupted talk time.

Other Features of Samsung D880 Dual SIM

The phone has not got special features any of that kind but I would like to appreciate Samsung for one thing which I find a good feature in the phone. It has given the D880 document viewer software which will be capable of letting the users use the Word Documents, Excel Spreadsheet, PDFs (of course) and stylish PowerPoint slides too. I think this is really good. Plus the phone has got MIDP which is a good feature for users to enjoy better gaming. Moreover, the phone has got TV – Out option too.

Overall Verdict for Samsung D880 Dual SIM

I won't say much, but all I would say in this section is that the phone is worth buying because today in the Dual SIM industry of phones, you won't find many phones which offer you such features and can stand in a 10K above price category. So it's worth buying.

Review: Functional 2 in 1!
Review By: vk    Review Date: 29 Mar 2010

2 in 1 at one time referred to an audio system that provided radio + facility to listen to music cassettes or CDs. Today, 2 in 1 is used very often to refer to the dual mobile phones that are literally flooding the market. The Samsung D880 Dual Sim is one such dual phone with a slider design.

The Samsung D880 Dual Sim is a dual phone in the sense that two SIM cards can be used at one go. The big advantage of this is that you can utilize two entirely different networks. Cool! Whats more, there is absolutely no need to reset your phone to change the SIM - there is a convenient button called Switch SIM to do this task. Even more cool!

As for the features of the Samsung D880 Dual Sim, first of all the keyboard keys are easy to use. It has a 3 megapixel autofocus camera with just about Ok image quality. The 2.3" TFT display is also fairly good. Although the Samsung D880 Dual Sim has Bluetooth, it has no WiFi facility. It also has the usual entertainment features: MP3/AAC+/MPEG4 player, FM radio, and a few games. Speaking of games, it is tough work trying to download new games in the Samsung D880 Dual Sim. It would also have been nice to have better options for ring tones. Honestly, it is tedious to listen to the same old ring-tings!

Review: Samsung D880 - Dual sim phone with many features
Review By: sasidharakurup v r    Review Date: 30 Mar 2010

Samsung D880 is a good phone when considering the dual sim functionality and the additional features they provided like camera, music player etc. It is one of the good high end phone with in the price range of Rs.12000 with a dual sim functionality. It is a good option for one using two phones for two sim cards. We can use both sim cards simultaneously in the Samsung D880 but the limitation is that the secondary sim card can only be used for making calls and sending short messages. We can also set seperate ring tones for both sim cards and the call list will indicate the sim card also.

Coming to the other features of the phone, its having a music player but doesnt sounds good as a nokia music edition phone or a good sony ericsson walkman series one. Its having an average sound quality. The camera is good enough (3 MP )with an autofocus, for the price of phone. It also has bluetooth and wap, gprs facilities which are functioning well. The FM radio is also having good reception and its nice to hear through the head phones. Another disadvantage is that it doesnt support 3G.

The design of the phone is the old fashion itself, they should have given a new trendy look to the phone. The slide feature is good but it looks, little bit bulky in size. The battery life of Samsung D880 is good considering it as a dual sim phone with good features.

So if you want to save some money from buying two phones for your two sim cards its a good option. Otherwise if you can carry two phones it is better to purchase a high end phone with in the same price and a low end phone for inserting the secondary sim.

The Samsung D880 Dual Sim has a simple, user-friendly design. Having two Sim cards in one handset is something many would appreciate. It comes with a sleek design and it's very handy. The battery cover has a rubber like finish that offers a great grip to hold. All buttons are evenly lit in white, making for great visibility in various environments. The alphanumeric keys are fairly large and soft, we found them a breeze to work with.

Display:
The D880 utilizes a 2.3" TFT screen of QVGA resolution that shows up to 256 K colors. Indoors the picture looks smooth, bright and crisp. It fares well in the sun, but since it employs a protective layer you will need to find the right angle before reading the display, as it gets somewhat washed out.

Design, Size and Controls:
The handset measures up at 104x51x18.9 mm and it weighs 116 g. The sides and display frame are made of plastic, plus the bottom ends along with a portion of the rear plate are textured, which is trademark feat of the maker's latest and greatest phones. The manufacturer has also put some dark-brown glossy accents - on top and bottom of the slider.

Nestled on the left-hand side are the volume rocker, lanyard eyelet and the SIM-card switcher – after punching in a number you can press this side-mounted button to activate the second SIM-card (by default the handset utilizes the first one) and then make a call if that was you intention in the first place, since both cards are always on.

Nestled on the right-hand side features the camera shutter key and the connectivity port used for plugging the charger or wired headset.
Battery: The handset employs a 1200 mAh Li-Ion battery, rated for 240 hours of standby and 3-5 hours of talk time.

Memory cards:
The D880 comes with microSD memory expansion slot (up to 2 GB). The bundled file manager allows copying data from one memory type to another, plus every application's settings allow you to select the default storage place (handset's internal memory or memory card).

Camera:
The handset comes equipped with a 3 mega pixel auto focus camera with image resolution of 2048 x 1536 pixels.
Video can be recorded at 15fps. The output format would be MPEG4. The video player is equipped with full screen landscape mode and you fast-forward and rewind videos.

Dual Sim Functionality:
There are two SIM-card slots, and it doesn't matter which one you use for a particular card, since you can pick the primary card from the phone's menu. When at the standby screen, the display shows both carrier titles, where the numbers stand for the respective SIM-cards. Upon an incoming call the handset will show you which card is actually receiving this call. What is more, not only can the user pick a ring tone for each card, profiles can also be customized for both SIMs. For example, you leave the first card in the default mode, and set the Silent profile for the other one. A great option that is missing on similar phones from other makers.

To outline the handset's focus on dual SIM functionality, the side plate houses a dedicated button for managing calls and starting up the SIM-manager. Not only does it bring up this application, but also when you are dialing a number or typing an SMS, it allows for one-touch access to either of the cards, so you can switch between the networks. Nevertheless, by default all menus feature the first cards' icon. But you can easily toggle to the other SIM card via the menu, so there are two ways to get the same job done. Some might actually like the key better.

Phonebook:
The phonebook is capable of holding up to 1000 contacts with filled in data fields. You can call up the D780's phonebook by tapping the right soft-key – its standard setup includes all entries from the handset's memory and both SIM-cards (you can opt to view either of them, though). The field beneath the name is the default number, which can be picked manually from the list of submitted numbers for a particular contact. Quick name search by first letters is supported once you press OK key you will go into detailed view of the selected entry.
All entries in the call lists feature the name of the SIM card that received/sent/missed corresponding calls. The phonebook shows entries from the handset's internal storage and both SIM-cards.

Organizer:
The handset's memory allows for as many as 1000 events of the following types – meeting, anniversary, task, other. Day and time as well as end time of an event are indicated for each entry.

FM-Radio:
You can store up to 20 radio stations in the memory the range of available frequencies is 87.5-108 MHz. The radio can work in hands free mode, but regardless of how you are going to use it, a plugged-in headset is a must, since it doubles as an antenna. The radio implementation is fine, although it doesn't pick up all stations equally well, but on balance, it is quite competent in comparison to other vendors' offerings.

Novelties:
Among the other offerings are the voice memo recorder, a world time application, a calculator, and a unit converter. A countdown timer and a stopwatch are also available.

Games:
The handset comes pre-installed with 7 games, of which 3 are fully functional (Cannon Ball, Forgotten Warrior, Archangel), and four are demo-versions (limited by time or levels). These demos are quite fetching, among them are Tetris Mania, Midnight Pool, Minigolf, Asphalt2 (trial one) and so on.

File Manager:
That's the place to search for all files such as music, pictures, video and sounds. Any uploaded file gets stored here. The disadvantage is that files sometimes are not displayed in the list immediately - in that case you will need to leave the menu and enter it again.

Files and folders can be viewed either as a list or thumbnails. You can mark any number of files. The handset supports Move, Copy and Delete operations, as well as various types of sorting (by type, name or size).

Specifications of Samsung D880:
