Product: NIKON COOLPIX P6000

Review: Good Image Trapper
Review By: vk    Review Date: 23 Mar 2009

The Nikon CoolPix P6000 is quite a mouthful to say and has equally vast features! First of all, its looks: it not only looks sturdy, it is sturdy as it provides for a great grip. The black colour looks good too. Also, the knobs and buttons are easy to handle.

The images taken by the P6000 have good resolution and what is simply great is the special feature that prevents the typical red-eye from spoiling a good photograph.

The picture control system feature of this camera is an added bonus, as it allows the photographer to adjust the image. The image can also be convienently converted to a Jpeg format.

Another feature is the optical viewfinder - this is a big help in extra bright conditions. You can also quickly trap a moving object with fairly good clarity.

All in all, a good image trapper!

The new digital camera market is becoming increasingly competitive. Yet, the innovative engineers at Nikon found a way to stand above the crowd with the Nikon Coolpix P6000, featuring built-in GPS.

This is one compact digital camera you wont find easy to forget. It offers features that raise it to the pinnacle. Since Nikon even competes with its own previous and current models, thats saying something.

The Coolpix P6000 houses an F2.7-F5.9, 4x zoom that ranges all the way down to 28mm (equivalent) and up to 112mm. Like all NIKKOR lenses, you get superb quality across that entire range. That quality is courtesy, among other aspects, of two ED glass elements that ensure sharp, accurate photos across the entire image area.

The P6000 will record in RAW mode, a format not found on all models in this niche. Photographers get the most image information possible to work with. Thanks to CMOS chip that holds 13.5 megapixels thats a lot of information, too.

The unit also provides Lens-Shift Vibration Reduction, a type of image stabilization technology. It ensures sharp photos and low shutter speeds in low light. Thats particularly important for those hand-held longer lens shots where a tripod might otherwise be needed.

Nikon also raised the bar for noise reduction. Shots made all the way up to ISO 6400 are clean, which is far more than the usual compact camera. Add the companys proprietary Picture Control technology and youre assured of crisp photos every time, automatically.

Still, some prefer manual control, and why not? For those shooters, theres a long list of options. The P6000 provides fifteen different scene modes, including Beach/Snow, Sunset, Dusk/Dawn, and Fireworks. There are also six different color options to create special effects right in the camera with no filter required. No need to work with photo manipulation software on the computer.

The Face Priority AF (autofocus) setting can recognize up to 12 faces. Even novice shooters get great portraits every time without fail. Forget underexposures. The camera adjusts for backlit scenes automatically. The in-camera Red-Eye Fix automatically and cleanly removes all trace of any flash-induced effects. The D-Lighting feature automatically selects the best possible setting to get ideal exposure in low-light situations, too.

Even with this list, there are some features on the Coolpix P6000 that are truly remarkable.

The Nikon P6000 is the first consumer camera with a built-in Ethernet connector. Upload images to Nikons "my Picturetown" just by connecting it to a network port. Use it to backup your images while youre on vacation, or any time.

More unusual still is the cameras built-in GPS function. It attaches a Geotag with positioning information to all your image files. Upload them to "my Picturetown" or any other site that recognizes these tags and you have instant location information. No need to wonder where you were when you took that great beach shot.

The Nikon Coolpix P6000 is simply a cut above the rest.

I just got this camera yesterday evening and have had time to play with just about all the main features. I also own a Canon PowerShot G9 so I find myself comparing the two all the time. With that said, I wasnt expecting anything with ultra low noise. The G9 noise levels are unacceptable (in my opinion) at any ISO setting over 200. Having come from this same type of CCD, I wasnt expecting miracles so Im not disappointed. If anything, I think the noise is on par or a little less noticeable on the P6000 than it is on the G9. That was a surprise considering that the P6000 is packing in more pixels on the same sized CCD. Heres my summary:

Noise = not great, but not bad at all as long as you stay ISO 200 or lower. If you go up to 400 and above, plan on using noise reduction software.

Optics = not tack sharp like you can get out of a dSLR, but, again, not bad. It reminds me of a good mid-range P&S camera in terms of optics. I think the G9 might be a little better here.

GPS = great! I really love this. Two words of warning: it eats the battery quickly and it takes a while to lock on to the GPS signal (especially if you are in a city like Chicago). Once its locked on, the GPS coordinates are pretty accurate.

Speed = Good. I found the camera responsive. No speed demon, but shutter lag isnt a problem and all the camera functions are fairly snappy.

Mac Compatible = 50/50. Its terrible if youre expecting native Mac support from Nikon on its new RAW format. Its great if youre just shooting JPG images. I only use a Mac, but third-party solutions are already available to let you process the RAW files on your Mac. Lightroom 2.1 is compatible with the new format and so is Adobes Camera RAW 4.6 plugin for Photoshop and Photoshop Elements. Ive been shooting almost exclusively with RAW and happily processing them on my Mac with no problems at all.

Size = GREAT! I love the size. Its just about the same physical size as the G9, but its twice as light. Its much easier to take this camera long and stuff it into a loose pocket. You almost dont know its there. Anything smaller would have been too small.

Vibration Reduction = a must have. It really works well, especially in lower light settings.

Youll enjoy this camera if you want a high-quality compact camera that has GPS, RAW and great creative control. It is a nice camera to take along with you when you just dont feel like pulling out the dSLR, but dont expect it to be a dSLR replacement because its not. Im quite happy with it and look forward to using it more and more.
