The Sirocco is a Mediterranean wind that comes from the Sahara and reaches hurricane speeds in North Africa and Southern Europe. It's also the name that Nokia have given to the upgrade of the 8800 premium slide phone. The original 8800 was made with a stainless steel case and looked a million dollars. It was an expensive and exclusive phone, designed to impress, but it was lacking in features and had shockingly bad battery life.

The 8800 Sirocco Edition shares the same look, but comes in a choice of black or steel, although most people will want the black version to distinguish it from the original 8800. It's worth noting that the case has a glossy finish that is a magnet for fingerprints. The Sirocco is crafted from premium materials, with a stainless steel casing and scratch-resistant sapphire-coated glass to protect the display. The design is ergonomic with a compact keypad and a smooth sliding action from the case. Like the original 8800, the bottom row of keys is not that easy to use because of its proximity to the slide. The Sirocco is slightly thicker and heavier than the original 8800, but is a good size and weight - not too large, but nice and substantial to hold.

Inside, the Sirocco has had its specification upgraded. The camera has been substantially uprated from 0.5 megapixels to 2 megapixels. The display is the same, but is still very good in its class with 262k colours and 208 x 208 pixels. There's a music player and an FM radio, but don't expect the Sirocco to compete against the Nokia NSeries or Sony Ericsson Walkman phone in the music department - that's not what the Sirocco is for, after all. The Sirocco does support Speaker Independent Number Dialling as well as speed dialling, and has an integrated handsfree speaker. The 8800 Sirocco has exclusive ringtones composed by Brian Eno and a custom user interface specially designed for the phone. Bluetooth 2.0 connectivity is supported, fast data transfer via EDGE, and the memory has been usefully upgraded to 128 Mbytes. The specification may not match other phone in this price range, but it suits the target market well.

The sales package is generous and includes a Bluetooth headset, a pouch to protect the phone and a smart desk stand that can be used to charge the phone and spare battery (and to show off the phone to your colleagues!)

Disappointingly the battery life of the Sirocco is not much better than the old 8800. It lasts a day or two at most under normal use. Still, the Sirocco is about style first and practicality second, and as long as you can live with its shortcomings the 8800 Sirocco is a stunningly beautiful phone. Enjoy!

Good: style and design
Bad: camera is not a high end one for a high end phone

An innovative designed from Nokia is this 8800 Sirocco. This phone is a slider phone which is sleek and looks simply great. The phone is very thin and it easily fits into ones pocket. But for the thinness of this phone, it is quite heavy due to its stainless steel casing. The screen of the phone is of a high resolution which allows the user to read the screen even in bright sunlight. The blue tooth facility allows the user to have a wire free connection with compatible devices. The camera of the phone is ...
