History of Skoda
The origins of the Skoda go back to the end of 1895, when Vaclav Laurin, a mechanic and Vaclav Klement a bookkeeper took up making their own bicycles. Things developed well for them and by 1899, Laurin and Klement Co. began to manufacture motorcycles. They entered competitions and won their first victories in international competitions. Another breaker through comes at the turn of the century when the company makes a move into manufacturing automobiles.

The first automobile, Voiturette A, was a commercial success, thus it became a symbol of Czech veteran motoring. In 1907 the expansion of the company began, and grew outside of the family business. The founders transformed L & K into a joint-stock enterprise. Progress leads to the next model, and as with many other companies during the First World War the company takes part in arms production.

1925 saw the L & K Company merge with the country's largest industrial enterprise, Skoda Pilsen. By this time L & K were making trucks, buses, aviation, engines and agricultural machines, in addition to cars, there for a merger with a strong partner was needed. The result of the merger was assembly line production of elegant automobiles, adorned with many fine details, and winning international competitions.

During the challenging years of World War Two, Skoda becomes part of the Third Reich's economic system. Its production line is trimmed to make room for wartime production. Despite all its problems Skoda still manage to produce a distinguished model: Skoda Superb.

The end of the War brings more changes for Skoda; all industry is subject to central planning. Contact and Information exchange with abroad are obstructed.

Even though the Skoda Company faced difficulties thanks to the solid base and traditional manufacturing processes and successful past the country and company still managed to progress, despite the impact of the social system and information vacuum. New Models such as the Tudor, Spartak and Octavia appear. But due to technological advances in the West the country's industry begins to fall behind.

From the 1970's the economic system begins to stagnate, the Skoda factory manages to retain its leading position in the eastern market only. A breakthrough comes in 1987 with the launch of a new vehicle- Favorit.

Political changes in 1989 bring along new economic and market reality. Skoda began to seek a strong foreign partner as it was essential to catch up and invest into the future.

April 1991 marks a major turning point for Skoda. They join VW, Audi and Seat as the Konzerns fourth brand.

Further progress follows. Due to this cooperation and new economic thinking, Škoda implements extensive modernization measures. The result is Felicia, a model able to withstand global competition. More successful models follow - Octavia, Fabia, and the company's pride, Škoda Superb.
