Samsung's NV series cameras have always had a touch of elegant design and the feel of a lifestyle product. Today, we've the Samsung NV15 for review. The camera claims to provide something new and different in the camera segment. Let's take a look at its overall performance.
The build quality of the NV15 is one of the best I have seen so far. It's lightweight, ergonomic, and easy to carry around in your pocket. But the most impressive thing about the NV15's design has to be the Soft Touch interface. It does take some time getting used to but seems fabulous once you get the hang of it.
The 10 MP CCD delivers average color reproduction. Skin tones turn out good -- though not exceptionally well. The images we shot indoors were of decent quality, but a little darker than the scene. All the images had some amount of noise (even at ISO 200), which became more obvious as we went on to higher ISO settings. With ISO 800 and beyond, the images were of no use (check out the sample pictures for more).
What I really liked about the NV15 was its Macro mode. The ASR mode works pretty well, but takes a lot longer to give you the processed image, which means that it greatly increased shot-to-shot times. Turning off ASR seems to breathe life into the camera: the shot-to-shot times are surprisingly small, and the camera feels responsive.
The movie mode on the camera offers users VGA-resolution (640 x 480) MPEG-4 video and advanced editing controls. The quality of the clips is decent enough for spur-of-the-moment videos - I mean the goofy ones. An interesting feature is the camera's Successive Recording mode, where you can pause and resume filming of video clips without having to save the clips as individual files. Additionally, you can operate the camera's optical zoom while filming, and engage a movie stabilizer to compensate for unwanted camera movement and subject blur.
The NV15 is also updated with Advanced Shake Reduction and Face Detection technologies. So, here's a camera that is simple enough for beginners, yet offers something for the more technical users to enjoy tinkering with.
The 2.5-inch LCD is sharp and has better than average resolution. But the LCD is not usable when the camera is connected to a TV screen or a computer. Also, the LCD washed out in bright outdoor conditions.
