On my first visit to the Gypsy Corner I ordered sabudans wadas (sago-filled deep-fried patties for Rs.40/-). My nieces ordered sev puri (Rs. 30/-) and the special pav bhaji (Rs.50/-)- the eatery is famous for this dish. Their orders arrived at our table very quickly, while I waited and waited and waited…. My nieces were nearly finished with their food when my order finally arrived – a good 15 minutes after I had placed the order! Considering I had to wait that long, I expected to eat something really good, sabudana wadas being my favourite dish at most restaurants. However, I was disappointed as the wadas were small in size and not bound properly, with the inner sago filling falling out easily. The salt was also a bit less.
The next dish that I ordered, kothimbir vadi (Rs.40/-) amazingly made up for the previous one. The neatly arranged perfectly square-shaped deep fried pieces, made from coriander leaves and batter, were simply marvelous. Crunchy, with just the right amount of green chillies, made for a tasty dish. The pav bhaji that my niece had ordered was also superb. A bit on the spicier side, it was served with two heavily-buttered piping hot pavs (loaves of bread). You can order an extra plain bread loaf for Rs.4/- or a buttered one for Rs.6/- The sev puri also was fairly good, with its mixture of onion pieces, crushed puris and sev . Note : sev puri is and pav bhaji are items available only after 3p.m.
On another occasion when I visited with a friend, I wisely avoided the sago wadas ! Instead, we both ordered misal (Rs. 48/-). This is a mixture of sprouted beans, onions and farsan that is served in a liquid base similar to sambhar . When the dish arrived, it looked like a watery mess. Pieces of lemon were served with it, to be squeezed on top. It tasted just like it looked: watery. Not at all what a real Maharashtrian misal should be. Other items that I have eaten here are the masala dosa (Rs.30/-) and steamed idli (Rs.22/-), which are reasonably good. Incidentally, these come listed in the section titled ‘Madras Kitchen! The mosambi juice (Rs.40/-) served in a tall glass jug is splendid, but the fresh lime water (Rs.22/-) is a tad too sweet for my taste buds.
Final Verdict : Prices are high compared to the same items available in more sufficient quantity at a lesser price elsewhere. Only some of the items are really worth ordering again (those marked in bold here). Yet, I would still recommend others to visit at least once to feast on the pav bhaji and kothimbir vadis. It is worth it!
Many of the regular patrons who flock to this eatery come for dinner, so you can expect a long wait for a table as the place is small with a couple of outdoor tables. Mini meals are available for less than Rs.80/- per head. A continental set meal will cost more (Rs.116/-). The fact that so many diners are coming here implies that the meals are good. Need to try out those...
