Review: Kebab Fest
Review By: vk    Review Date: 31 Jan 2009

Six of us dined at Kebab Court to celebrate a birthday. There is ample parking space and it is easy to locate on the East Coast Road. When we visited, the Lucknow festival was on. The menu was an attractive yellow and white one, with a background of typical Lucknow structures. One section of the wall had coloured old fashioned lamps and the restaurant itself was lighted up by beautiful flower-shaped lights hanging down from the ceiling. The large tables had glass tops edged by wooden borders and the silken chair upholstery had bright gay blue prints. The long sofa seating, though, had some dull striped upholstery. The staff were dressed in the black traditional Lucknowi salwar-kurtas.

Each of were first given a complimentary welcome drink of a small glass of limbu and pudina sherbet. For starters we had hara bhara sheek kebab (vegetables, spinach and capsicum) with green chutney (Rs.130/-) and the non-vegetarian members of our group had Galavati kebab (Rs. 195/-) and Chicken tawa kebab (rs. 160/-). All the kebabs were excellent and were the start of better things to come. In fact, after ages we ate authentic kebabs. However, we were disappointed with the quantity – just 6 small ones in a plate with grated carrot & onion pieces. Next we had two types of parathas – ulta tawa paratha (Rs. 70/-) & latcha paratha (Rs. 30/-) with tomato paneer gravy (Rs. 150/-). The parathas were piping hot, crisp and very well made. The gravy was a bit spicy but great in taste and had good-sized chunks of paneer. For the main course we ordered veg.biryani (Rs. 125/-) that contained a mix of various vegetables and came with a raita accompaniment. A few of the potato pieces were under-cooked but otherwise it was very good. For dessert we ordered moong dal halwa (Rs. 60/-) & shahi thukada (Rs. 70/-). The moong halwa was more like dudhi halwa and the shahi thukada was a flat piece of fried bread topped with a spoonful of some cream. It was extremely oily & rubbish to taste so one plate of this sweetmeat was abandoned as nobody wanted it. It was a sad end to a really good meal.

The service was of high standards and the efficient very courteous staff was quick to respond. The kids who dined at the restaurant were provided with high chairs to give them easy access to their food. Overall, it was one of the best meals that I've enjoyed in a long time and well worth a second visit. Meal for two would cost above Rs. 1000/- + taxes, which is well worth it. Just avoid the dessert!

Tip: It would be advisable to book a table in advance for a group, as after 8.30p.m., the restaurant filled up quickly.
