Review By: Sangeeta Sanjay Chaubal    Review Date: 04 Dec 2010

Iruppu Waterfalls form one of the most visited tourist place in Coorg. Known for its majestic wateralls, Iruppu Waterfalls form a special attraction of Coorg. They are often referred as the best Cascades of Coorg. Iruppu Waterfalls lie amidst Brahmagiri Hills which form a major part of the Nagarhole National park. Brahmagiri Hills have a lot of legendary tales associated with it. It is said the Lord Rama had visited this hill, when he was searching of Sita. During this visit, Lord Laxmana shooted an arrow in the Brahmagiri Hills to create a river.

This river went on to be known as Laxmantirth River. The water of this river is considered holy and pilgrims take dip in the water to get rid of ailments and their sins. Hence due to the presence of Laxmantirht River, the Iruppu Falls are also referred as Laxmantirth Falls. Iruppu Falls have Rameshwar Temple on the banks of this river, which is one of the most sacred pilgrimages in Coorg. People from many parts of India, visit this temple, especially during Shivratri. A visit to Iruppu Falls, offer a great trekking option to adventure sports lover. The trek from the bottom of the waterfalls, up to the top is worth enjoying. The trekking route passes through dense forests and offers relaxing trip. The Iruppu waterfalls are also amidst thick coffee plantations. Being close to the Nagarhole National Park gives it an additional advantage. One also gets to visit this park, other than the Iruppu Waterfalls. Iruppu waterfalls is very crowded during weekends and holidays.

The best time to visit Iruppu Waterfalls in during Monsoons when the climate is at its best. During summers, the majestic Waterfalls transform into a shape of narrow stream. But during monsoons, the Iruppu Waterfalls take the shape of giant falls rushing wildly through the zigzag route amidst the Brahmagiri Hills. The Iruppu Waterfalls drop down from a great height around 170 feet, after rushing through stones and rocks. One can hear the strong sounds of the rush of this waterfalls from long distance. Apart from this sound, one can enjoy beautiful chirp of birds along the route and may even, if lucky could watch some beautiful birds on their way like Peacocks.
