Adyar Bakery, Adyar Review

When visiting Chennai, this is one bakery that you absolutely MUST visit. It was here that for the first time in my life I tasted some unusual pastries and not just the usual run-of-the-mill chocolate and strawberry ones.

A gently sloping ramp leads down into the shop from the street level, with sensibly provided steel rods to hold on to – a boon for senior citizens and the physically challenged. The bakery section is on your right as you enter and the minute I set eyes on the cakes and pastries on display, I was drooling. In fact, the neat and really clean display is a photo-worthy click (see photo). Moreover, the products here are way better than the pastries and cookies at Cakewalk.

Sinful . There is no other way to describe the pastries I had here: Blue Currant Red Currant -or what is it cranberry? – I was too busy devouring it so don't remember the correct name! and Irish Coffee. The fruit-based pastries were exactly what they claimed to be – you actually get the taste of blue currants and feel as though you are eating a blue color literally. The Irish Coffee also lived up to its name – you take a bite and think perhaps that you are not eating but drinking a cup of coffee! It is very very tempting to try out all the delicious pastries on display, but one must control one's purse strings (each single pastry costs Rs. 30/-).

So with great difficulty I turned to the other end of the long counter and decided to try out the Vegetable Puffs (Rs.12/- per piece). The puff is yet another wonderful discovery. Unlike the ones I have had at other eateries, this one is literally a puff – it is puffed up with a good quantity of veggies and not merely a half-empty space inside. Last, but not the least, I took home a packet of strawberry biscuits (Rs. 25/-) and these too, were delicious – neither too hard nor too soft just crumbly right and the strawberry taste does linger in the mouth.

I wondered seriously if there was anything at all that was not appealing to the taste buds!

The Bakery premises are extremely well-maintained, bright, airy and, most important, clean and hygienic. The floor is spick and span, the staff all have hair covers and gloves, and the glass displays are absolutely clean. You are not likely to see any product that looks dried out and not fresh.

Visit this Bakery branch just once (I don't know if the same quality products and variety are available at its other branches) and you will want to visit it again and again and again…
