Lonar Review

Lonar is one of the most beautiful travel destinations in Maharashtra. This place gained its importance because of the presence of the only lake in India, created due to the hypervelocity of a meteor impact. This crater is listed as the third largest crater in the world, the first being the one in Arizona.

Lonar is around 600 km from Mumbai. It is located in the Buldhana district of Maharashtra. The nearest airport for this place is the Aurangabad airport and then it is around 122 km by road. The nearest rail station happens to be Malkapur.

Lonar crater is roughly around 2 km from Lonar town. Lonar provides some good trekking opportunities for adventure sports lover, as you get to explore some wild scenic beauty, and the temple remains within the crater slopes.

The lake that evolved out of the crater is salty and alkaline in nature. The crater is around 42000 – 52000 years old. The slopes of the crater are surrounded by deciduous trees. It forms like a strong ring of these huge trees that run all around the basin of the crater.

The lake houses a wide species of flora and fauna. Various migratory birds are also found in this lake during the migratory season. Few of them include the shell – ducks, the cherons, red-wattled lapwings, larks, robins and many more. Pea fowls are found in hundreds, nesting here in the lake. Few animals that seem to have made this lake their home include the chinkaras, the gazelles, peacocks and many more such species.

But it's not just the crater that one should visit when in Lonar, there are few other travel spots, like the beautiful temples and the ruins of few temples present here in Lonar. Few of these temples showcase the same artifacts present in the Khajuraho temple, but sadly they are in a dilapidated stage. The must see temple in this area is the Vishnu Temple.

The accommodations available at the MTDC resorts are quite comfortable and reasonable. The crater is very close to the resort hence it is advisable to stay here then in town. The resort is most of the time vacant and one can get accommodation easily available. The best time when you find some crowd here is in the month of October.
