Murugan Idly Shop - Besant Nagar Review

Yet another restaurant that looks ordinary but has fantastic food – and that is what ultimately matters! Easy to locate in Besant Nagar as it is just across from a Church, it has car parking space at its doorstep. Four of us headed there after picking up my niece from St. John School. We arrived at around 4p.m. and when we walked in, the staff was sweeping the floors. Not a promising start! Four tables were occupied on one side, but we were able to get a table near the window overlooking the Church in the non-air-conditioned outer hall. Our hunger pangs worsened due to the poor service. We were seated for quite some time before somebody came to take our orders of four dosas and four vadais. Then resumed another long wait, during which we wondered whether to go somewhere else. However, we decided to stay put as we had heard a lot about this restaurant's famous idlis and vadais.

Finally, a staff member came to lay clean green plantain leaves on our table and a small glass of water, from which we sprinkle a few drops on the leaves and wiped them down. After some more waiting, the long rolled up piping hot dosas were served to us by a waiter wearing clear plastic gloves – good hygienic sense, I must say! Another 5 minutes elapsed before another waiter came to serve the chutney and sambhar. My relatives have eaten here earlier, so had mentioned 5 chutneys. However, we were served with just two varieties – a result of the downturn in the economy perhaps? Both the dosas and chutneys were excellent, though the sambhar was a tad too watery for my liking. In fact, it was an art to keep it from flowing off the leaf! Then came the equally piping hot medu vadais. They were simply out of this world – very very crisp with curry leaves embedded in them and crunchy to eat. Overall, the food was awesome and definitely worth a second visit despite the poor service.

Cost: Dosa is Rs. 25/- Medu Vadai is Rs. 12/- the coffee is Rs. 12/- So the Bill for four of us came to just Rs. 201/- (including tax). Not bad at all!
