Review: Honda Activa - A Great Family Scooter.
Review By: Sourav Jana    Review Date: 27 Apr 2009

Well i have now been riding this vehicle for almost one and half years. Am impressed with certain features of this scooter. The first thing that comes to ones mind is the looks. Ya it is true that it is not the best looking scooter in the market, but its unisex design serves well for both men and women. So weather you are a guy or a girl you can use it comfortably. This serves as a very good family vehicle which has a varied range of users. It has in general stood upto its expectations barring a couple of instances. Its very well and sturdily build has taken hits on its front and even fell a couple of times. Its metal body is pretty stable and the best benifit is it can take hits and so the dents caused can be easily removed by getting it de-dented without replacing the body in a long run. At 75kgs its a pretty heavy bike but that is what contributes to its stability. Its powerful 102cc engine works great and is pretty much less noisy. It has good pickup compared to the bikes of its class. Though the downside is its mileage which i have got about 30-35 kmpl where as the company boasts of bout 50kmpl though i have seen some of my friends achieve about 40kmpl which is somewhat ok.Its not very comfortable for long rides as the driver tends to get a achy back. Also its not very comfortable to sit for the pillion rider for long durations. This is an Auto geared scooter. There is no clutch to be operated or gears to be shifted. Which makes it very easy to ride. The left lever on handlebar controls rear brake while the right one controls the front brake. Both brakes are internal expanding drum brakes. There is a brake lock (parking brake) on the rear brake lever to lock the rear wheel, which prevents vehicle from rolling on inclined surfaces, especially when resting on the side stand. The shock absorber in the front is link type. The shockers are not very effective and gives bumpy rides on rough roads. The under seat storage space is spacious enough for my helmet to go in. One of the most irritating flaws i found in the design was the awkward placement of the kickstart. You cant kick it without putting in on the centre stand and lacks tacktile feedback which causes a lot of irritaion if ur bike stops respondin to the electic start that too in the middle of the traffic. Also it needs a careful use of the brakes as it tends to skid easily. There is some free space up front where you plant your legs, to hang shopping bags from the luggage hook. Since there is no foot brake pedal, this space can be used without hindrance. This is one big advantage of the Activa over a bike. If you plan to carry stuff like gas cylinders then the optional front storage box should not be fitted. It comes with tuff up tubes which is also a major merit. Over all its a good scooter for small distances and family use.
